Healthy Foods Help Banish Period Blues

ree

Do you have uncomfortable periods? Do you frequently eat junk foods?  Science tells us there can be a link.

You’ve probably heard that junk food isn’t good for you. For women, junk and fast foods are positively detrimental to physical and mental health. Chips, cookies, sodas, fast-food burgers and fries are high in calories, saturated fat, salt, and sugar, and low in beneficial fiber and nutrients. These empty, non-beneficial foods (thus the term "junk") can diminish the body’s energy, reduce immunity, cause unhealthy weight gain or loss, whack out blood-sugar levels, and even affect your mood.

And for period health, junk and fast foods can wreak havoc due to excessive sodium and sugar levels. Consuming too much salt can lead to water retention, causing bloating and intensifying the discomfort of cramps. Too much sugar causes blood sugar spikes and crashes, leading to acute inflammation in the body, which can intensify cramping pain. Sugar also contributes to chronic inflammation that causes long-term harm to your physical and mental health. Not only that, sugar can contribute to bloating and mood swings, both common PMS symptoms.

If you, your daughter, or anyone you know suffers from period discomfort, consider high-salt-and-sugar, low-nutrition foods as the culprit.

Replacing those inflammation-triggering junk foods with health-supporting, nutrition-rich whole foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and fish (tuna and sardines count) will nourish your body, support your health, and alleviate your period blues. You'll feel better during your period - and every day of the month.

Imagine not dreading you period and feeling good on your bleeding days with high energy, a clear head, a bright mood, and only minor cramps. You may perform better in your activities, feel more focused, see life from a positive perspective. By choosing healthy foods every day of the month, this could be you.
